How much sleep we actually need depends on our age, activity level, and even genetics.

Here are some tips to maintain sufficient sleep and prevent us from feeling drowsy, continuing yawning during the day.

1. Develop good sleep hygiene

Do not mix between lying in bed and actual sleep. If we do so, then we have no way of knowing how much sleep we’re actually getting, so we can’t figure out how much sleep we need. The idea is to have at least decent quality sleep (falling asleep as soon as possible after we go to bed)

2. Stick to a consistent bed time or wake-up time

We need to attain a rate of 90% consistency. Sleep specialist M.Stevenson, Ph.D. says that if we sleep half the time we are in bed, then our sleep efficiency is only 50%.
If we go to bed at 10:00 pm with the idea of getting up at 6:00am, but we just can fall asleep until 2:00am,then Dr. Stevenson says don’t go to bed until 2:00am. Rather than laying awake and sleepless for 4 hours, we will feel better if we don’t go to bed till then. Read the rest of this entry »
